Are you looking at the history? Generally, if one half is missing it is because that half of the conversation deleted the original message.

I had a running conversion with someone but now when i read their last reply i can only see their responses and not my response to them.

Right, did you delete the messages on your end?

From the sent items, yes.
Does it use those to fill in my portion of the messages in my inbox?

As a general rule, (IMO) you should never bother to Delete your sent messages. They don't delete from the recipient's inbox; only your Sent. that means only YOU won't see your side of the conversation.
Also, the site will auto-delete them, once your Sent gets full.

My sent was just about full so i figured I'd better delete some.
