So, I'm working with a well that's boing to be 3/4"-1" deep, about 2" diameter in the bottom, flaring to about 4".

The well is made out of plaster and currently I have woodland scenics realistic water. I was thinking something murky with just a touch of paint to make the water on the nastier side.

Optimally, I'd like to put a plastic pane in the well a bit below the surface to conserve on material and, if I'm feeling gimmicky, be able to have a fun light under it.

My plan was to just paint and varnish the thing, install a pane and use some clear goop to seal it around 3/8" down, then put down a few layers of fake water, but I'm pretty inexperienced with it, having only used the stuff for a few bases. Any tips?

Biggest thing is to use layers. It creates a better look and it will dry faster. Thicker layers will take forever to dry.

You can use a piece of Plexiglas or even a piece from a plastic blister. If you want to show depth, mix in food colouring. I have tried washes, inks and paint and it always dirties up the water. Usually making it opaque and not usable.

Unless you want that as a base layer (say a dark purple or blue bottom) and then work up from there layer by layer.

Obviously painting the bottom of the plastic piece can show depth too.

Thanks! Yeah, I can get impatient about those layers... will try to hold off even though it'll take like a week to get through.

You can pour a heavy layer but you'll need to wait like a week. Make sure you put it in a spot where no dust will get on.

That goes for any layer you do really. Nothing worse than dust being trapped in your water.

Yes. Anything that may happen to venture in.

Needs air to cure though so even a container with holes poked in.

I have used blue ink to tint it before. Just remember a very little goes a long way. This is a fountain I use it on. Also keep it level because even mostly dry it can still shift.
