Is White Dwarf for me?

Post by Crimso »

I have not looked at a White Dwarf since about 1997. I have fond memories of card tear out sheets, Warhammer Quest tiles, 40K weapon cards and even warhammer fantasy spell cards. However, this was way back when GW had a really diverse product selection. These days they looks like they are slimming down to their big three games.

My question is, do they still do this? Have inserts, cards, sometimes promo minis? A magazine that costs $10 an issue, I would think there must be something of value to be found other than nice pics of battles. I only have a Warhammer Empire army, but have always liked GW. I'm thinking of getting a subscription, but what is the usual content these days?

Thanks

Short answer, no. It's now nothing but a preview of items to come. AN ad of thing that are.

It's lost it's magazine status with the post office for shipping/postage purposes and has been classified as a catalog for too much ads vs content/story space.

If it has a new army or game you're interested in, it's a great place to look at the pretty models.

But if you're looking for the WD of old, it's gone.

I used to get 2 copies every month. 1 to have and keep for the articles in general and 1 to rip out the parts that were needed, like the spell cards, bunker, buildings and character stats. Some of you might recall that the 'compilations' books were collections of WD articles, army lists and such. Yes that's right, WD used to give you codexes for free.

White Dwarf, IMO, is a kind of joke now.
I don't remember the last time they gave away a "freebie," unless you are generous and want to call the rules for new models (Ork fliers, etc) "freebies," since they are available nowhere else, unless you payto download them (apple device compatible only).

Long gone are the days of cool articles, interesting conversions and cool stuff. The magazine is actually a catalog (literally - it's officially a catalog, even though they REFER to it as a magazine), and is more advertisements than anything else, now days.
My understanding (haven't read one, myself) is that the battle reports are lackluster affairs where the "new" army they are showcasing always wins. I have heard no small amount of complaints that the armies they choose in the battle reports (especially the army playing AGAINST the "new shiny" army) is not competetive in the SLIGHTEST.

Yep, pretty much what they said. No more exciting articles. No more rules for things like Savlar Chem Dogs or awesome campaign ideas. I bought two issues of WD back in the fall because, supposedly, they were going to go back to releasing rules and such. The only ones I saw were the FAQ/Update thing for Daemons, and the Khorne knights on juggies. Both of those became useless when the codices for those armies dropped a few months later. It's sad. So very sad.

Can you guys tell me if there is a good reference out there for WD and perhaps a list of inserts? I saw card buildings, I'm really looking for those kind of inserts, instead of trying to find the old boxed sets. My GW heyday was from 1993 to 1998. Which I bet was everyone else's hey day too. I would really like to pick up some more back issues from the 1990's.

thank you for the tip, I will definitely not be wasting the money now. I thought what you are saying would be the case. $10 each for a catalog full of ads. (which is what a catalog IS though? haha.) Still, I want a magazine, not a catalog.

I had a list that came out years ago in WD. I traded/sold it when when I traded/sold my WD's.
It has to be at least 10 years ago.

gamehobby.net used to have a great index, but it appears to have folded.

You can try these:

I am always in the market for weird and wonderful GW oddbitz and ephemera. PM me if you have something old/weird/rare.

I somehow disagree in that the white dwarf has lost is excitment (sorry Im not on the longbeard boat that everything was better in my time :D)
Im looking at it right now and even if we dont get new card buildings or extra miniatures I can still see really interesting stuff.
Army in parades show a lot of great armies and conversions the empire regiments of halberdiers and spearmen looks really good, the tau army in electric blue looks amazing and the conversion made on inquisitor warband "blianchitsu" style are crazy incredible...just my 2 cents
No international trades (not including Canada)

The old WD used to have articles about rules, stories, fiction, cards for new units, how to paint units and some ads for not just the big 2 1/2 games and the new game of the quarter, but also all of their games. There isn't anything intersting except seeing the new models before they're online. The new WD doesn't even have prices listed for the models. Go to Source of Legends and see what the old WD had.
It even had articles about games by companies other than GW. [gasp]
Now the Specialist games are ignored. If you want to see anything about them, you have to go to the website.

It's just an expensive catalog. $10 and you don't even get a coupon off next purchase. [catalogs that used to charge for copies gave coupons off purchases]
Who here will pay Best Buy, Walmart, Brands Mart or any store $10 for a catalog, let alone $10 a month?

I can't seem to find a Stuff of Legends or Source of Legends for any kind of White Dwarf Index? The rpg.net index only has WD 1 through 100. I'm looking at the range of 170 to 220

Good god, man! There are people out there who have had to scrape and scrounge to get those very issues you tossed on the trashheap!

:)
